Design Digest. September 2018
Don’t miss the exhibition I Saloni Worldwide, which will be held from 10 to 13 October in Moscow. Earlier, we already wrote about iSaloni Worldwide Moscow 2017. This is a digest for September in which we’ll tell about the reconstruction of a mid-century house, about a South African villa, about pieces of furniture from terrazzo, about apartments in the sky, about updating a hotel in Stockholm and about an actor’s house.
Reconstruction of the Rainbow house (Garcia House)
Architect Ron Radziner reconstructed the house, built in 1962 by the famous American architect John Lautner for jazzman Russell Garcia. It took more than three months to find a nearly identical match for the marble in the original terrazzo, since the original marble aggregate is no longer mined. A new lava stone was also found, instead of the old one, which was installed around a chimney in the living room and in places around the pantry. Small changes were made inside the house, such as new design elements and spacious shower and a bathtub overlooking the hills. As a result, the house has acquired modern amenities while retaining the original appearance.
African Victorian Villa
South African interior designer Etienne Hanekom designed the interiors of a Victorian villa built in the early 20th century. This house, divided into two different houses, the designer bought two years ago. It took six months to create a unique living-dining room, and in the old dining room to install a kitchen that opens onto a veranda with an iron fireplace.
A collection of pieces of furniture from terrazzo
Designers from Joyce Wang Studio at the exhibition for the London Design Festival presented a collection of furniture and household items from the terrazzo, showing that the material is appropriate not only in the bathroom and the kitchen. The collection has a limited edition and includes three tables, a vase, two bowls, a saucer, an hourglass and a decorative sphere. Everything is available in three colors: charcoal, rose or sage.
Apartments in the sky
Tom Robertson Architects designed in a skyscraper modern apartments, an area of 375 m² (4036,5 ft²) with a large open courtyard overlooking Melbourne. The kitchen is made in the minimalism style. White cabinets and natural stone countertops harmonize with the kitchen backsplash, and with the massive island, which has dark cabinets. Oak floor and wooden beams on the ceiling fill the interior of the house with warmth.
Renovation of the Radisson Collection Hotel
Swedish architectural studio Wingårdhs recently finished work in Stockholm on the Radisson Collection hotel, which exists since year 1912. The studio refreshed the hotel’s interiors, which included 170 rooms, a lobby, conference rooms, a new restaurant and bars. The main priority of the reconstruction of the hotel was to create a warm and attractive atmosphere, which emphasized the new functions and the original details of the legendary hotel.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson House
Recently, the actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson showed the film crew of the American Architectural Digest his house and told about his favourite subjects in it.
